9:24pmAuGres’s Pirate FestivalI’m sitting here tonight trying to unwind the confused mess of informatiom/misinformation that is offered up as enticement to vote for various polititions. The web of lies, deciet, and misinformation, makes my head hurt more than it did when I split it open the other day. About the only sure thing I can think of is, if a candidate is supported by our current governor or our current president, then I’m positive that I don’t want to vote for them.
Then there are the tax increase proposals. That’s a pretty easy one, my taxes are so high now, that I have to plan a year ahead to be sure I can pay them!! Those get a big NO!
If these people, didn’t have such a big effect on my life, I wouldn’t care one way or the other,,, but, we all know, they do! So I guess I’ll get an even bigger headache, trying to figure out this mess. Wouldn’t want to waste a vote afterall.
While adding some wiring for lights in the boat barn, I had a minor accident.
What you see above is the result of a 59 year old head, meeting concrete from a height of about 9 feet. Didn’t hurt the concrete one bit! While I was wiring a light fixture, my ladder slide backward on the slick new concrete, dropping me about 9 feet to the floor. Fortunately I went straight down until the ladder impacted the edge of a hand brake, at which time it threw me to onto my right side onto the floor. When my shoulder impacted the floor, my neck flexed and I popped the floor a good one. End result, a good amount of blood loss, stopped up my 10 shiny new staples in my head, a tweaked knee, sore shoulder, and sprained wrist. All in all, I believe someone was watching over me (again). (It could have been a lot worse
I have no idea why the ladder feet slide across the floor, (the ladder was at a good angle). The only thing that might have made a different was, had I been wearing a harness. (but I don’t have one in my garage).
When I’m healed up a bit, and get back to the wiring job, I’ll figure some way to attach the top of the ladder to the roof rafter, before I start working.
I guess I could consider it a little help with the decision to lose the PonyTail I’ve worn for nearly 42 years. My hair was so matted with blood, that it was easier to just cut my hair.

Congratulations MrGrey!!!! Four and counting?
Well it’s that time of year again at the Eastern Arenac Sportsmens Club . Tickets are available again for their annual gun raffle. 700 tickets, 10 new long guns as prizes. Check the link for more info.
I’ll be buying some tickets, but unfortunately they’re not offerring the lightweight 20 gauge double barrell I’ve been lusting after, as a prize this year. Maybe if I win a gun, I can trade it for the double? And then there’s that SpringFeild Armory .45 XDm that’s not on the prize list either.
Oh well, maybe I’ll win one of those big NRA gun raffles. (a maybe one in 5 million chance)
It looks like I missed out on the drawing for the Michigan State Muzzleloading Associations Rifle Raffle. It was a beautiful little .32 Cal. North Carolina Flintlock. The drawing was July 11th, and I haven’t had a call yet.
Here’s a picture of one of the reasons my boat is currently on it’s trailer sitting in my barn and not at it’s dock.
This is the barge pusher trying to get the barge unstuck. It seems that they’ve decided that they can move the 70 plus foot wide barge that drafts 6 feet of water, down the 5o foot wide channel, (they’re digging 6 ft deep). As they swing around the slight corner in front of my dock, the current forces the barge over within inches of my dock, and into the undredged part of the river. Note: The river is 150 feet wide, and they are dredging the channel 50 ft wide, but not in the center of the river. In front of our dock, the channel is fully on the other side of river, to the point that the boats parked against their seawalls, are pretty much in the channel.
As it turns out, I’m getting zero benefit from the dredging, plus, I can’t use my boat all summer. (that is, unless I want to launch and load the 12 thousand pound thing everytime I want to use it). That’s about a 2 hour process, so I’m guessing it won’t happen a lot.
Speaking of fishing, (lost fishing that is), I’ve been hearing that those who can get out, are hammering Walleye out northeast of Charity Island. And as for the river report, that’s a bust. I’d be shocked to see an edible fish pulled from this muddy mess. The only bright thing about the mess is, as it leaves the mouth of the river it quickly turns north and fills up the little bay formed by the river mouth and Point Lookout, leaving most of the mud, logs, sticks and such, out of the main Bay. Not good for those living along the (south looking) Point Lookout shoreline, but better for the Bay in general.
And another messed up thing about this whole mess. They’re supposedly dredging the river, to get access to the State of Michigan Port of Refuge harbor, uptown in AuGres. Supposedly boat’s out on the Bay that get in trouble, can come up the river to the Port of Refuge, for either repairs, stock up, or weather a storm. Problem is, they’re not dredging the slips! The newly dredged channel will allow them to get near the docking slips, but any large boat or sail boat that try’s to dock will likely get stuck in the mud when they pull into their slip. (Average depth, 2 to 3 ft) Perfect example of Government planning at work!
We had a happy birthday (for the USA!). A very busy time, as witnessed by my lack of visiting this site. I got out fishing a few times and we actually caught some Walleye (finally). Six to be precise. We’ve come to the conclusion, (we being a consortium of local fishermen) , that the spring dredging of the upper river, and summer dredging of the lower river, have driven the Walleye away from the AuGres area of Saginaw Bay. The spring dredging killed the spawn, and the continued mud just has them moving to parts elsewhere. (Leave it to the powers that be to screw up the fishing).
The river dredging is nearly in front of my house now, and the dredging rig takes up so much room, that I pulled my big boat out of the water.
Here’s a picture of the rig in action, just down river from my dock. I admit, we really needed the dredging, but I sure miss the fishing this year.
Our few trips that brought us fish, were to the south, nearly to Linwood. A hot spot near Linwood brought us some nice sized fish, and an exciting fight that wound up breaking the leader, and losing a very large Walleye. Bottom line, if you’re looking for Walleye fishing this year, AuGres isn’t the place. Anyway you look at it, it’s 20 to 30 minutes or longer, on a calm day, to any productive fishing grounds. Hopefully things will get back to normal next year!
Speaking of having my boat out of the water. While it’s out, I’m doing a bit of maintenance. Early in the spring, before I launched it, I decided to try Aurora Bottom Coat Wax. According to their advertising, two coats of their special wax, and the bottom sludge will slip right off with a power washer. YEAH RIGHT
Unfortunately, this is what it looks like after two hours of power washing. (And it’s only been in the water around 2 months). I’ll be contacting Aurora with my complaints, but don’t really expect anything from them. I suppose it was my bad to believe their unbelievable advertising
This is the stuff, I’ve relearned an expensive lesson, When advertisers claim the impossible, they’re looking for a quick buck at your expense. It looks like I’ll be acid washing the boat again this fall, and maybe bottom painting it next spring.
