Well, we finally got out for of a day of Perch Fishing. We went out into the shipping channel, 31 ft, pretty much east of Point AuGres. About 5 hours of fishing brought us 19 keepers, and a bunch of babies. With the little ones stealing minnows, I’d guess that we went through about 4 dozen minnows. A lone hook baited with a nightcrawler, brought in nothing. The fish finder was showing us small schools of roaming fish, likely the Perch we were catching, but absolutley nothing that looked anything like a Walleye, or even a Sheepshead or Catfish.

I’m longing for the Walleye to return, pulling in a Perch, just doesn’t excite me like hauling in a big Walleye from 100 ft out. We did catch a couple of very good sized Perch, but there’s just not anything there that could be called a fight. I would think that all of these small (bait stealing) Perch, are a good sign for the future. With all the minnows they steal, they should be growing.

It’s on the other side of Saginaw Bay for us (very nearly Lake Huron), about an hour and 45 minute boat ride, but we had a great time over at Port Austin last weekend. We didn’t do any fishing, but we did use our host’s motorized rubber dingy to explore the coast line, north and south of the port. I found this site with lots of winter pictures of the sights.

And I found this site with summer photos, which looks a lot more like what we saw.

I’d like to thank these folks for making their photos public. We got quite a few off of a cell phone, but as yet, I havent gotten access to them. My lasting impression of the the area was, “I never knew there was that much rock in Michigan. Rock walls, rock beaches, and ROCK bottoms on the lake.

As noted, we didn’t fish this trip, but here’s a fishing report for the Port Austin area from Muck Boy.

And finally a food report. Friday night we stopped in at “The Bank”, a noted upscale resturant in the town. It was hot and we needed a place to cool off. After browsing their menu, we decide to cool off while having a beer, rather than one of their exorbitantly priced meals. The next night, we decided to try the Sportsmens Bar, right in the middle of town. Black Angus burgers served with fries and cole slaw, washed down with a draft Killians. Now this is a meal I can recommend, very good, and amazingly, the cost of two, of the half pound burger meals, including a draft for me, and bloody Mary for the wife, was less that the price of the lowest cost meal on the menu at “The Bank”. Kudo’s to the Sportsmans Bar and Grill in Port Austin!

The Pirates Fest is reported to have gone quite well, those that attended are said to have had a good time. Myself, I opted for Walleye fishing. Unfortunately, we might have had more luck at the Pirates Fest, although, we did pick up enough Walleye at the Tournament Weigh in for a nice Fish Fry. (They were giving away the ones who could not be returned to the water).

The Walleye fishing in the Au Gres area, has NOT improved, the tournament people had to go 16 or more miles north to find fish. Those who went south, didn’t do so well.

And on a different note: You can obtain your Bushmaster Man Card here, if you think you need one. P.S. you can also revoke the Man Cards of others.
