It was Sunny and very windy today, but the river was navigatable in my small fishing boat. I found the dredging rig, just around the corner downriver from my property. It’s a lot bigger than it looks here.
Go here, for a photo album of the AuGres river, including more photo’s of the dredging equipment
As promised here are pic’s of the new barn. It’s complete, except for a little grading work in the yard around it, and putting in some crushed rock at the entrance door. As soon as I get a chance, I can start filling it up.
I’m still working on getting pic’s of the dredging equipment.
I heard that the Rifle river had a flood warning the other day! The Augres River has been up a bit, and moving pretty fast (for it), but nothing overly impressive. I’ve been to busy to get out fishing, plus the weather has been marginal. We’ve got rain threatening today, with a 8 to12 mph breeze.
I’ve been seeing a couple of different boats cruising the river with lot’s of electronic gear, (including a laptop). I’m guessing that they’re working toward that July 1st date to start the dredging operation. Earlier in the year I was worried about how muddy the river would be when the dredging started, but it’s been so muddy for the last few weeks, that I don’t think it can change much.
I’m thinking about heading out to the sportmens club tonight for an informal muzzleloader shoot they’re having. I don’t think I’ll dig the old .54 cal. out of the safe, but I’d kind like to see what the guy’s bring and watch some of the smoke.
Been batchin’ it for a few days now, and the easy fix’n food is just about gone. I think I’m going to try my hand at a pot of low fat Chili. It’s fairly healthy, doesn’t look to hard, and I think all the ingredients are in the house. Plus, it aught to last me for a few days.
If it works out, (and I live) I’ll post the recipe.
FOLLOW UP: I went fishing in the river for a couple of hours. I pulled a Rapala floating minnow, and a crawler harness, and for a while a red/white, and a green/white Daredevil, both against the current and with it. If I was planning on fish for dinner, I’d be going hungry tonight. Not even a pencil pike! There’s a lot of current in the river, and still an awful lot of mud and debris. Maybe that’s the problem? Oh, and by the way, the National Weather Services report of zero to 1 ft waves in Saginaw Bay was dangerously incorrect!!
I got in around six pm, and the turkey meat was thawed so I started the Chili. I wound up using Rachel Ray’s Indian Summer Chili recipe (loosely). I went a bit light (according to Rachel) on the Cumin, Barbacue Sauce and Salt. I left out the corn entirely and added Garbonzo beans, Hunts Chili beans, a couple of sliced fresh tomatoes, two squirts of Louisiana Hot Sauce, and a table spoon of Tabaso sauce. I have to say, it was tasty! I drank the leftover half beer from the recipe as I was mixing up the pot, and had another with my chili, accompanied by a slice of bread and butter, and a few corn chips on the side. I’m topping of the evening with a Beef Eater’s and Tonic. Now if I just had fish to clean, it would be a nearly perfect evening.
We’ve gone from fire warnings due to dryness, to fully saturated. Today is the 5th straight day with at least a half day of rain. The River is nasty looking. I’ve seen at least two tree trunks (Make that Three) floating downstream today. It’s incredibly muddy and full of leaves, twigs, brush, and other drebris. Even if it wasn’t cold and rainy, I wouldn’t consider taking either of my boats out. My guess is, that the Bay downstrean of the river mouths, probably isn’t a good place to try to go fast in a boat.
I know they did a lot of dredging upstream this spring, and I’m guessing we’re getting some of the byproducts, floating downstream with every big rain. They’re supposed to start dredging the river downstream of (the city of) AuGres on July 1st. That will be a welcomed project, but I’m wonder how it will affect Walleye fishing. (It’s got to make a LOT of mud!) Oh well, I supposed it can’t be to detrimental on -my- fishing this year. Zilch, is just about the same as Zero.
