A cold turn of weather

With the weather turning colder,  a bit of snow finally on the ground,  and the river near thick enough to walk on,   I’m thinking it’s past due time for me to reacquaint myself with and old friend.  His mother was Belladonna Took,  one of the three remarkable daughters of “Old Took”.   His father,  Bungo Baggins.  His name,  Mr. Bilbo Baggins.

We first became acquainted many years ago when I first read “The Hobitt” by J.R.R Tolkien.  Of late much has been said and filmed about Mr. Tolkien’s Trilogy of Books,  ”The Lord of the Rings”.   Which I have read a couple of times over the years,  and of course seen the Trilogy of films many times over.  But,  it all began back in elementary school for me,  when on of my teachers introduced me to Bilbo and his friends.   It’s been many a year,  since I’ve sat down with the tales of Bilbo’s adventures,  and my copy of the book,  is a bit yellowed and dry,  but I believe,  intact enough to get me though to the final line:  “You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you;  but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all”.   “Thank goodness! said Bilbo laughing,  and handed him the tobacco jar”.

“The Hobbit, There and Back Again”, J.R.R Tolkien ,  1st copyright 1937.   My copy by Ballantine/Fantasy,  a paperback, in 1973 sold for $1.98.  And it appears it will become a big budget  movie around 2012.  I hope it’s done as well as the Lord of the Rings Trilogy was.

Slow period

Not much I can think of to say lately.   Politics have become to clear  and to irritating to comment on,  (as in beating a dead horse).   I haven’t been fishing or shooting.  The boat barn is finished.    And a coming vacation is going to keep me away from this blog for about 2 weeks.  Call it quiet time I guess.

second hand fishing report

I’m told that good Perch are being taken in 32 to 36 ft of water,  a little south of straight out from the mouth of the AuGres River.  Also in 47 ft of water,  south and east of the Gravelly Shoal Light.  Myself,  I still long for Walleye.  :-(    Once this cold clears up,  I hope to make at least one more trip out to see if they’re back.

P.S.  And it appears that Capt’n Dan agrees.

First Cold :-(

A picnic last weekend,  and weekend visitors this weekend.  One of them brought me my first cold of the season.   Not feeling my best.   Sipping on Tullamore Dew,  and sucking cough drops.  Unfortunately I can’t take most decongestents so I’m just dealing with the stuffy nose.  :-(

Mid Sept. update

The weather has been pretty cool and the water pretty rough.   We did get a chance to take the boat out yesterday afternoon though.  It was a little late to start Perch fishing,  and the Walleye are still far and away,   so it was pretty much just an evening ride.   I did have the fish finder on though,  and the results of that were pretty discouraging.   We saw nothing that looked like Perch or Walleye,  and only one area,  in about 42 feet of water that showed any life at all.   There were a number fish arches on the bottom.  Catfish or Sheepshead most likely.

The boat is feeling heavy,  or sluggish.  I suppose it’s from the summers aquatic build up.   It’s dropped about 8 mph on top end,  and takes a lot more rpm’s to lift it up out of the water on plane.   It’s getting close to the time to pull it out,  clean it up,  and try out my new boat barn.   Near time to call another summer quits.  :-(
