After yesterday’s post asking where the water in the Great Lakes if going, today I here a news report stating that FEMA is redrawing their floodplain maps. It seems that this is a co-conspiracy with the Insurance companies. It seems that the inland lakes and rivers are flooding nearly every year for the past few years, costing the insurance companies a ton of money for repairs.
Someone please explain this phenomenon to me? Inland, we’re getting flooding and very high water levels, while at the same time, Saginaw Bay looks like a bath tub with the drain plug pulled.
Where is the water in the Great Lakes going? Specifically in Saginaw Bay? On the river 3/4 mile of so from the Bay we see the river going down and down. The water daily inching away from the seawalls. This, while up river they’re getting flooding rains, and snowmelt. Yesterday we took a ride out to the boat launch and on out to the river’s mouth. It’s a very depressing sight! MUD, and more MUD.
I can’t help but think that someone knows what’s going on. Last year they dredged the river up to the ”port of refuge“, so boats could get in during bad weather. They dredged it to six feet starting from the water level last summer. Right now, it’s at about 4 feet! and if they hadn’t dredged last year, there would be sections right now that would be less than 1 foot!
All the rivers are boiling water into the Bay, and still, it’s going down!
WHERE IS OUR WATER GOING????
It was a cool day today, with no sun until the afternoon. But, the river has simmered down a little bit, and suckers are back. It’s still pretty muddy, but the current seems to have dropped off enough to allow the bottom feeders to do their thing again. They were a bit smaller today but plentiful. I’m thinking the forcasted hard rains will shut them down again.
We woke up to sun, then it clouded up and snowed, then this afternoon it warmed up and turned into a nice afternoon, sunny with high of 46 degrees.
The river is running very fast and has actually risen about a foot. I here there are flood warnings in some area’s. With all the crap flying down river, I’m guessing the fishing is on pause. Which is just as well, because I spent the afternoon installing a new sump pump. There’s nearly a foot of water under my house! I guess I can take this as a reminder that I was going to install a backup sump pump last fall, but never got around to it.
Yep, confirmed, I kinda like it. I’m currently trying to complete an assigned Quest and to do so, need to recruit a new player.

And now that we covered my “Quest“, a little Au Gres river fishing report: The suckers are running! Maybe not like they do in Omer, but enough to make an interesting day of fishing. The Bay is pretty much open also. There’s a lot of floating ice out there, but a careful boat could easily get out there to fish a bit. Walleye season is closed in the river until the end of the month, but open down stream of the boatlaunch and the entire Bay.
