River and Pt. Lookout mini report

It was overcast and windy today,  with a hard rain moving through about 5pm.  Not a good day for fishing.  I did get a chance to try out the new JLV LURES Bladed Shad though.

jbl.jpg   Note the attached (removable) spinner blade at the front end and the jeweled eye’s.    This lure floats at rest,  but dives quickly when pulled.  It casts very well,  and will dive up to 14 ft on  cast retrieve,  but it’s depth is very controllable by slowing and/or stopping the retrieve.  I’m told that when trolling,  it will dive up to 20 feet.  (Can’t wait to test it)  At 2.95 this one should be hot!

NOTE: JLV RAPTOR Minnows are on sale for 1.99 (good time to stock up)

The local fishing reports say the Walleye are slow because of the weather,   (Wind and more Wind).   But I’ve heard that folks are catching some out in 6 to 12 feet of water.  I’ve got a little work to do on the Alaskan,  and a little more to do on the SeaRay,  but other than that, I’m ready to get out there as soon as the weather cooperates.

As far as River bank fishing goes,  a crawler , minnow combination, on a perch rig,  will get an occasional bite,  but plugs, spoons, and leadheads,  seem to be pretty useless.

First trip up the river

The 17 footer (Smoker Craft Alaskan) went into the river today.  We launched and trolled out to the mouth of the river,  where we had to turn around,  because the anchored fishing boats,  had the path to the Bay completely blocked.  (Who gives them the right to do that?)

We then trolled back to the launch,   where the Walleye restrictions are still in effect until April 26th.  On that run my partner had a couple of good hit’s but had trouble keeping them hooked.  We’re guesssing they were Pike.  The Alaskan ran well and we ran her all the way up to our dock and tied her in.  I’m thinking the battery croaked over the winter,  because I had to use the trolling battery to get it started.  The main battery just doesn’t seem to want to charge up.  Oh well,  you know what they say,  “a boat is just a hole in the water, that you throw money into”.  (The bigger the boat,  the more money)  :-(

Lookin’ like Spring

I still think mother nature is going to play at least one more dirty trick on us,  but we’ve had and incredible week, weather wise.  We’re starting to see a bunch of boats clustering around the mouth of the river and the edges of the breakwall in about 10 ft of water.   Leading me to believe,  that the Walleye are biting!  Time to put the dock it!

Bimini Tops

I spent the afternoon today, (very nice weather by the way) stitching up the seams of the Bimini Top on the Alaskan.  A particularly strong gust, pretty much shredded the seams toward the end of last summer.  Now that I’m relearning that old leather stitch I used to use to make knife sheaths,   I think a couple of hours tomorrow, will get the old Bimini back into operation.  (And I’m guessing the 10lb Fireline I’m using for thread,  won’t break) :-)

preppin’ to fish

It warmed up this afternoon and I took the opportunity to unwrap the 17ft SmokerCraft Alaskan  sitting by the garage.  It looks like it wintered pretty well.  I have a few mod’s and minor repairs to make before it hit’s the water,  but nothing to big.  I pulled the trolling motor mounting system off today,  the trolling motor I have,  just doesn’t push it that well.  I’m thinking we’ll try a small drift sock this year.  And maybe next week I’ll Ok the sportcenter to summerize the SeaRay.   12 day’s til Walleye season opens!
