Yes, there are still Salmon in the AuGres River

Sept. 19th at around 4 pm on a warmish afternoon, with sprinkling rain.   Using a dimpled chrome and silver spoon, casting off the back of my docked boat.  He hit it Hard,  and fought like a demon!

Not as big as the 36 inch Coho my wife caught in the river a few years back,  but still,  a nice fish

Fishing?

No,,  I haven’t been fishing.   The winds have been very strong for the last couple of weeks,   probably due to the East Coast Hurricane.   I had heard that those who braved the waves before the winds really whipped up, were catching  a few Perch.   Actually,  they supposedly were catching a lot of Perch.   Myself,  I’m waiting for the winds to die down,  and would like to get in a least one more long day.   I’m thinking I’ll take crawlers,  minnows,  and of course my hot-n-tots,  and reef runners.    If the Walleye don’t show up for the party,  maybe the Perch will.   All we need is a little calm weather before it turns to cold.

Boat thoughts

We took a 5 night boating trip with friends, across Lake Huron to Port Austin, Michigan.    We wound up with 7 boats in our group and had a great time.   I took my SportCraft (25 ft’er) and we slept in the cuddy cabin.  We were by 5 ft,  the smallest boat of the group,  and the only “fishing boat” of the group.   We had a great time,  but 5 nights and 70 miles, on a 25 ft fishing boat starting me thinking about a larger boat.

It just so happens that the Storage yard nearby has a real nice 36 foot Trojan for Sale .    It’s a one owner,  and has always been stored and maintained at this same yard.   The owner is getting old and has apparently lost interest.   I took a look at it the other day,  and was really impressed.   I told the broker,  the the boat neatly met my requirements,  and that now I’d have to do some number crunching and see if I could be it’s requirements.

Well,  I did the number crunching and unfortunately is just doesn’t work out.  :-(    Up front,  by trading in my SportCraft,  I could fairly comfortably afford to purchase the new boat,   but the cost of ownership is a big ugly Cave dweller,   just drooling to get it’s teeth into me.   As much fun as a 36 ft fishing/cruiser could be,   the cost factor just jumps to high.  Everything about the boat would be 2 to three times more expensive to maintain.   Gas milage,  storage,  winterizing,  dockage fees, etc.   Not to mention just the basics like cleaning, waxing, and such.

Oh well,  it was fun to think about it,  and do the investigative work.  It just doesn’t  work out.

Second Walleye run this year

Second time out a couple of days ago.  We spent about 5 hrs on the water,   trolling the triangle between big and little Charity Islands and the Gravely shoal light.  We trolled in water varying from 16 to 33 ft,  pulling crawler harnesses on bottom bouncers,  and inline sinkers.  There was  a good chop to the water,  and in fact,  the waves are what finally brought us in.    It was a another pretty good day on the water,   but not an especially good fishing day.  In the 5 hrs of trolling,  we caught ONE 17 inch Walleye.   There were fish on the fish finder nearly all the time,  but no bites.      From what we could hear on the radio,   the other fisherman were having about the same kind of day.

First Walleye run for this year

Well,  we spent about six hours,  trolling around straight out from the mouth of the Au Gres river,  and points north of there.   We saw quite a few fish on the sonar,   but only hooked 4.   One nice keeper,  one big one that slipped the net,  and a couple of babies.   It wasn’t a great fishing day,  but it was a great day on the water.   The boat ran well,  and slides through the water nicely with it’s new bottom coat.   We heard a lot of radio chatter,  and it sounded like mostly everyone was having the same luck as us.  The fish were there,   but getting them to bite was a bit of a problem.  We fished mostly in 30ish feet of water,  but did hear a few fishermen saying the were doing well in 10 feet of water.  Unfortunately,   we don’t know where they were at in 10 feet of water.  It’s another nice day for boating today,  but alas,   it’s lawn work day.    :-(
