Coho in the AuGres!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Yesterday afternoon on my third cast,  using a  Johnson Silver minnow,  painted in Firetiger colors,  I got a dandy hit on my lightweight 7ft rod.  After about a 3 minute fight,  I pulled in a 27 inch Coho Salmon,  in excellent health.  He was hooked good through the corner of the mouth,  with the other two barbs hooking his inside upper and lower jaw.

The picture of him in the net didn’t turn out,  but here he is after I dropped him back in,   he was a bit dazed,  but after swimming aimlessly for a moment in the shallows,  he sprinted for deep water.  The neighbors are targeting Perch today,  so we’ll see how that goes.  I just might try tossing a few more spoons.

AuGres River mini-report

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

It’s COLD!   Just a few snow flurries so far,  but definately Cold.  We hoping for a warmup in the next few days,   got a dock to take out,  and another boat too.  The only fish I hear coming out of the river are a few small Perch and occasionally a Pike.  The big water has been deadly for over a week now.   There’s still some leaves on the Maples, Oaks, and Birch, and Popular,  but it’s starting to look and feel, like winter.

On a side note,  yesterday I lost the hardrive on an old Snap Server 1000.  It had a ton of nostalgic stuff on it,  but nothing of any real value.  Just a reminder of how fragile electronic data can be I guess.  :-(   If anyone has any suggestions as to how to get the thing up again,  long enough to pull some info off it,  I’d appreciate  any suggestions.

Out of the water

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Today was the day,  we tried to make a short run at fishing before pulling the boat,  but that didn’t work out.

Leaving the mouth of the river,  we noticed that the marker bouy’s were bobbing in and out of sight in the waves.  We had to run the windshield wipers to be able to see, to get out to the marker bouy’s.  Once past the buoy’s,  we were in about 4 to 5 foot Chop.  NASTY STUFF!  (I have a knot on top of my head,  to witness one of the drawbacks of owning a hardtop fishing boat).  Giving up on the fishing idea,  I pulled it around and headed back to the launch.

The next big challenge was hull cleaning.  After trying every type of cleaner I had in the garage,  I went out and bought a gallon of MaryKate’s On/Off bottom cleaner.  Very strong acid,  would be another way to describe it.   I have to admit though,  it did do a pretty good job of cleaning the hull. (with only minor lung damage to my lungs,  and one destroyed pair of coveralls).

Looks like that last trip for Walleye was just a pipe dream.  Oh well,  there’s always next year.

Voted today

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

And not in an early voting scam either,  I did it the old way,  absentee ballot.  I did it this way,  because I was a bit afraid of what my reaction might have been,  if someone had tried to sway my vote at the polling sight.

We’re looking at the last couple of day’s to take the SportCraft out for a ride.  The waves have been huge for the past week.  Supposedly the’re going to start settling tomorrow and even better Friday,  (though there’s rain in the forcast),,  but hey,  it’s a hardtop.  One way or the other,  it comes out of the water for the winter, this weekend.  :-(    I’d really like to take a  run down between the Rifle Bar, and the Saganing Bar,  and get that 19 ft deep trough I’ve been told about,  marked on my GPS.

FactCheck?

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

In a conversation today,  a reference to www.factcheck.org was made.  My response:

If you tell a lie often enough,  some of the people will eventually believe you.

Fact Check (NOT) NO FACTS

“Just last year, FactCheck’s primary funding source, the Annenberg Foundation, also gave $50,000 to the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence for “efforts to reduce gun violence by educating the public and by enacting and enforcing regulations governing the gun industry.” Annenberg made a similar grant for $100,000 in 2005.”
