Point AuGres mini-report (plus a shooting report)

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Today,  August 28th, 2008;

It’s windy and overcast,  occasional light rain.  I don’t think there’ll be many boats out on the Bay.

Second Hand fishing Info:   I hear there are still a few Walleye biting,  if you can find them and stand the waves.  Also had a report that the Perch have been biting out off the Hotel on Pt. Augres.

Shooting:  The other day I took three of my .22 rifles out to the club,  to figure which one I would use in the upcoming Turkey shoot.  1.  my Ruger 10/22, w/4 power scope  2. Dad’s old Glenfeild .22 automatic, with 2.5 weaver scope.  3.  Dad’s reclaimed Winchester Model 67  .22 single shot w/iron sights.

I burned up about 175 rounds,  and still didn’t make a definitive decision.  The Ruger will put 5 rounds touching at 50 yards,  as will the Glenfeild.  The old Winchester,   with it’s iron sights, is a bit harder to get touching holes with,  but still stay’s in the black.  (These shots from a steady rest)  Since the Turkey shoot requires 50 yard free standing shots,  (no rest or body support of any kind),  I next tried all three from the required position.

From a free standing position,  it’s a much different process.  Instead of lining up the sights and squeezing the trigger,  it’s more of a timing thing.   A smooth but quick pull of the trigger, as the sights waver across the bullseye.  Try as I might,  I can no longer hold a crosshair or bead,  steady on a bullseye at 50 yards.  Steady stance,  good grip,  slow steady breathing,  and squeeze the shot off at what appears to be the best alignment of the sights.  Much tougher than it might sound!

I was able to post pretty good scores will all three guns.  The frustrating part is,  I know the guns are doing their part, (the steady rest session proved that).  Now it’s up to me.

The Ruger is a quick pointer, but short barreled and light.  The Glennie is longer barreled, but doesn’t have the scope magnification for a really clear picture.  The old model 67,  iron sights and all, is quick pointing,  good barrel length,  but also very light.

I think I’ll study the targets,  and maybe try another practice session (if time allows) before Sept 14th’s Gun Raffle/Turkey Shoot/Picnic .   I’ll pick one of the above three,  and maybe take Dad’s old Winchester 62a pump,  and my 6in S&W K-22, out for one more pre-session.  I’m guessing the Turkey shoot gun will be one of the first three, but who knows?

And a side note to the Gun Grabbers:  I’ve owned all the little .22’s mentioned above for a lot of years,  and a couple of them have been in the family for more than 50 years.  There’s only one way,  you’ll ever get these family heirlooms!

Quote of the Day!

Friday, July 11th, 2008

“Want to know why Washington DC is the blight of America instead of being the centerpiece of our great country? Start looking at the impact educated fools like Chief Lanier make on our cities and then start working your way up through the government to find the same types of educated idiots who put the Cathy Laniers of the world in charge. The common denominator of all these gun haters is a fear of law-abiding citizens having the ability to protect themselves and the nerve to think they know what is best for you and me…”

The Second Amendment Lives!

Friday, June 27th, 2008

And I hope,,  is stronger today.   Oddly enough,  the major news outlets,  don’t see the Supreme Courts ruling in the Heller case as major news.  Even though this ruling forever confirms the the right to keep and bear arms,  is a Constitionally decreed right,  a basic human right,  a right that cannot be denied,  by Federal government, State government,  Local government,   or any special interest group!!!   SOUNDS LIKE BIG NEWS TO ME!

But,  then,  I suppose if this ruling doesn’t become widely known,  if the citizens of this great nation are not aware that our Constitution and Bill of Rights have been upheld by our highest courts,  then,  those who wish to continue to squash those rights,  can continue to ply their evil trade,  at least to some extent.

You’ve got to give them that,,,  They never give up.   What ever it takes,  who ever must fall,  it’s their way or no way.

It brings to my mind, an old question.  If you can’t live, prosper, and be happy , living by the rules of our Constition and Bill of Rights,  why not move somewhere,  where you won’t be bound by, or protected by it?

What a Great Birthday Present, for the 4th of July! :-)

Can we Gloat a bit?

A basic Human Right

A second amendment triumph

New Release:

““Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court should forever put to rest any contention that the right to keep and bear arms is not a fundamental, individual civil right,” said SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb. “For six decades, anti-gun rights extremists have engaged in a monumental fraud that has been unfortunately perpetuated by activist judges who erroneously insisted that the right to keep and bear arms applies only to service in a militia.”"

Boat/Albatross delimma?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Ok,  so I have a  nice older 21ft SeaRay.  Runs like a top and is configured about as well as it can be for fishing. It’s more of a day cruiser, (cuddy) and not really and overnight boat.  Single 305 V-8 with Mercruiser outdrive.  It serves the purpose.

Along comes a 25 Ft SportCraft Hardtop.  Lot’s more room,  auto-pilot,  GPS/Fishfinder combo,  trim tabs,  350 V-8 with Mercruiser outdrive.  Much nicer fishing boat,   with overnight capability.  Possibly more efficient on fuel.

Problems:  First off,  the price difference between the two boats is about $18,000!    Then there’s always the problem of selling the SeaRay in today’s economy.  The SeaRay is worth around $6500.   I can dig up the cash,  and suffer with the 2 boat syndrome for a while,  but not forever.

Also,  and even more on my mind is the cost of gasoline.  If it goes beyond all reason (it’s actually already there)  and I wind up having to make a planter, or cabin,  out of the boat.  Do I want a $6500 planter,  or a $24,500 planter?  Do I want a $6500 planter,  next to a $24,500 cabin??

Troubling thoughts,,,,   That SportCraft is a sweet ride,  but,  it sure seems like it’s heading down the path toward Albatrossism.    I’m already wondering if I’m going to be priced out of sport shooting,  by the cost of ammo,,,,   Are we now going to be pushed out of fishing,  by the cost of fuel.

Your thoughts are welcomed,,,
