It seems that I had forgotten about service packs 1,2 and 3. I quickly learned that XP without service packs is, not only no longer supported, but won’t do much on the internet.
Ok, so I try to download SP1, nope, it seems that Microsoft isn’t providing it anymore. The server that should be feeding it out, no longer exists. So I go to MS support, and am told, that I have to install SP1 before I can install SP2 and 3, unfortunately they no longer support service pack 1. While deliberating reformating and installing Linux, I googled SP1, and found an article that said SP2 included everything from SP1 and SP1 was no longer needed. (THIS ARTICLE WAS NOT FROM MICROSOFT) Anyway, I installed SP2, it took about 2 hrs, and now I’m working on SP3. If SP3 installs, and the machine still runs better, I’ll install Google Chrome and AVG virus scan. More on that later.
By the way, the Toshiba is a 1 ghz model with 4 meg of ram and a 20 gig hard drive. It’s looking like XP with SP3 isn’t going to leave a lot of room on the drive to play around.
