We had a happy birthday (for the USA!). A very busy time, as witnessed by my lack of visiting this site. I got out fishing a few times and we actually caught some Walleye (finally). Six to be precise. We’ve come to the conclusion, (we being a consortium of local fishermen) , that the spring dredging of the upper river, and summer dredging of the lower river, have driven the Walleye away from the AuGres area of Saginaw Bay. The spring dredging killed the spawn, and the continued mud just has them moving to parts elsewhere. (Leave it to the powers that be to screw up the fishing).
The river dredging is nearly in front of my house now, and the dredging rig takes up so much room, that I pulled my big boat out of the water.
Here’s a picture of the rig in action, just down river from my dock. I admit, we really needed the dredging, but I sure miss the fishing this year.
Our few trips that brought us fish, were to the south, nearly to Linwood. A hot spot near Linwood brought us some nice sized fish, and an exciting fight that wound up breaking the leader, and losing a very large Walleye. Bottom line, if you’re looking for Walleye fishing this year, AuGres isn’t the place. Anyway you look at it, it’s 20 to 30 minutes or longer, on a calm day, to any productive fishing grounds. Hopefully things will get back to normal next year!
Speaking of having my boat out of the water. While it’s out, I’m doing a bit of maintenance. Early in the spring, before I launched it, I decided to try Aurora Bottom Coat Wax. According to their advertising, two coats of their special wax, and the bottom sludge will slip right off with a power washer. YEAH RIGHT
Unfortunately, this is what it looks like after two hours of power washing. (And it’s only been in the water around 2 months). I’ll be contacting Aurora with my complaints, but don’t really expect anything from them. I suppose it was my bad to believe their unbelievable advertising
This is the stuff, I’ve relearned an expensive lesson, When advertisers claim the impossible, they’re looking for a quick buck at your expense. It looks like I’ll be acid washing the boat again this fall, and maybe bottom painting it next spring.
