Dental Insurance to replace GM’s???

A letter arrived from “Personal Blue Dental”  (Blue Cross),  stating that they were offering a “for pay” insurance to replace that which Generous Motors took away from us.  At first glance,  I didn’t like the look of it.   Topped off by the fact that they were trying to force a decision,  by leaving us only 5 days to make a decision.

A quick call to my Dentist,  confirmed my feelings.  The Dentist’s office told me that last year our expenses before the insurance company paid anything were $1270.  Four cleanings,  2 xrays, and one crown.

Compare this to the newly offered insurance.   $1100 in premiums,  $140 in copays for the cleanings,  and $400 for the crown.  Thats adds up to $1640.

Let’s see,  Out of pocket yearly expense $1270,   With Insurance yearly expense $1640.  Sorry, “Personal Blue Dental” ,  I didn’t flunk any math classes!!!!

  1. What did you have done at the dentist? You need to ask yourself that – then ask yourself what if I needed a crown, what if I needed a bridge, what if I needed oral surgery like a root canal or an abscess. I don’t know about dentists where you are at but I recently paid, out of pocket, over a couple of grand for oral surgery my wife needed because my BC/BS only has minimal dental coverage. Add that to other dental expenses throughout the year and I am pretty sure we went well over $3,000. If I can get decent coverage that is only $1640 yearly you can bet I will jump on it this coming open season at work. That is darned inexpensive to what dental costs can be if you need more than routine care. Of course if I can get coverage cheaper than that, yet it is decent coverage too, I’ll go for the less expensive one.

    All the best,

    Glenn,
The key phrase is “my BC/BS on has minimal coverage”.
That’s pretty much what their offering us, “minimal coverage”.
50% co-pay on anything other than basic cleaning and checkups, and 25% co-pay on those.
With the coverage they’re offering a crown is $800 without coverage, $400 with.

My wife had a crown, last year and for what last year would have cost us, she could have had another crown, and we still would have broke even. Except, the plan they’re offering, only allows a crown once every 84 months, so the second crown wouldn’t have been covered.

I just don’t think they’re offering us much. It’s a lot of double talk to make us look like were getting more coverage than we are. A calculator and good records, show a problem with their coverage.

    I’m still shopping around.

  3. Sounds like many a dental plan I have seen before, and thus the reason I have never paid for one before. Still though, with my bills this past year, I have to look into them this November.
