Last nights ice,  piled up on the beaches and damaged a few homes near Linwood, Mi. .   News story here .   In the process it broke up the ice on most of the Bay.  Looking out from the Au Gres River,  the open water now starts about 50 feet beyond the mouth.  (Though the last 3/4 mile of the river is still ice covered)  The river is flowing strongly in front of our house,  but shore ice still prevents a try for early Walleye.  This doesn’t stop dozens of ice fishermen from getting out on either side of the river levies though.   The small bays on either side of the levy,  bordered by Point Lookout on the north and Point AuGres on the South,  are still ice covered,  and dotted with fishing shanties,  some within 10 feet of the open Bay water!

News Flash Ice Danger!

Just heard on the news,  waterfronters in Linwood are being advised to leave their homes,  tonights strong winds  are pushing Bay ice inland at the rate of 20 feet per half hour.

Ice Out! March 7th

We were gone on the 7th of March,  but that’s the day the ice went out on our section of the river.  From what I can tell, it was a soft breakup,  it looks like it melted through in the middle,  and opened from there.  Very little in the way of ice flows, or damage.  My weather station say’s it was 70 degrees on Friday the 6th.   Currently the river is open a little past halfway from town to the Bay.  The Bay itself is still solid,  with all the shanties that are left,  having been moved much closer to shore.  Tonight, 10pm Sunday the 8th, it’s currently 33 degrees, raining and very windy.  I don’t know how much more of this weather the Bay ice can take.  Once the Bay opens, the river will push on out pretty quickly.

Looks like we’re going to have a short window for Walleye dinner,  until March 15th,  when season closes on inland waters until the last Saturday in April.

P.S.  This is what 1 Trillion dollars looks like!

We lose a few more of them everyday.
