It’s windy and overcast, occasional light rain. I don’t think there’ll be many boats out on the Bay.
Second Hand fishing Info: I hear there are still a few Walleye biting, if you can find them and stand the waves. Also had a report that the Perch have been biting out off the Hotel on Pt. Augres.
Shooting: The other day I took three of my .22 rifles out to the club, to figure which one I would use in the upcoming Turkey shoot. 1. my Ruger 10/22, w/4 power scope 2. Dad’s old Glenfeild .22 automatic, with 2.5 weaver scope. 3. Dad’s reclaimed Winchester Model 67 .22 single shot w/iron sights.
I burned up about 175 rounds, and still didn’t make a definitive decision. The Ruger will put 5 rounds touching at 50 yards, as will the Glenfeild. The old Winchester, with it’s iron sights, is a bit harder to get touching holes with, but still stay’s in the black. (These shots from a steady rest) Since the Turkey shoot requires 50 yard free standing shots, (no rest or body support of any kind), I next tried all three from the required position.
From a free standing position, it’s a much different process. Instead of lining up the sights and squeezing the trigger, it’s more of a timing thing. A smooth but quick pull of the trigger, as the sights waver across the bullseye. Try as I might, I can no longer hold a crosshair or bead, steady on a bullseye at 50 yards. Steady stance, good grip, slow steady breathing, and squeeze the shot off at what appears to be the best alignment of the sights. Much tougher than it might sound!
I was able to post pretty good scores will all three guns. The frustrating part is, I know the guns are doing their part, (the steady rest session proved that). Now it’s up to me.
The Ruger is a quick pointer, but short barreled and light. The Glennie is longer barreled, but doesn’t have the scope magnification for a really clear picture. The old model 67, iron sights and all, is quick pointing, good barrel length, but also very light.
I think I’ll study the targets, and maybe try another practice session (if time allows) before Sept 14th’s Gun Raffle/Turkey Shoot/Picnic . I’ll pick one of the above three, and maybe take Dad’s old Winchester 62a pump, and my 6in S&W K-22, out for one more pre-session. I’m guessing the Turkey shoot gun will be one of the first three, but who knows?
And a side note to the Gun Grabbers: I’ve owned all the little .22’s mentioned above for a lot of years, and a couple of them have been in the family for more than 50 years. There’s only one way, you’ll ever get these family heirlooms!
