An order arrived from “Cheaper than Dirt“ today. With it came the Cheaper than Dirt, Master Catalog. Too cool! It reminds me of the old “Herters” catalogs from the ’70’s. Just about anything anyone could ever want, (pertaining to shooting). I spent a good hour browsing through it and found at least a half dozen things that I really need, (even though I didn’t know I needed them before I looked in the catalog).

Had business today, but the report is that the perch were -in- the river! I had reports from a couple of different people, saying they caught a nice mess of fish.
P.S. The new TF-99 is supposed to ship tomorrow.

These two Viet-Nam era .308 rounds came out of a batch of old ammo that a friend of my Dad, gave to him.

One was a little lighter than the other. Upon investigation, I came up with the theory that one of these rounds was originally found in one of John Kerry’s combat vests.

I’d sure hate to be carrying these two, in combat! (the pictures a bit small, that thing attached to the back of the bullet, is a “roach clip”. It was obviously used, and there were reminents of MJ leaves in the case, nicely masquerading as a military issue 7.62×51)

Ok, here’s one of those promised shooter’s reports:
I awoke this morning to a wet, heavily fogged in morning. Since I had been counting on the weather report of a sunny warm day, I waited until noon for it to clear. (Didn’t happen)
Around noon, I packed up my gear and headed out to the clubs range. I figured I had to clean the guns after shooting them anyway, so what if I get a little damp. I packed the new DPMS LR-308B, the antique Winchester 62a, and strapped on my Glock.

The drive out there (about 15 miles) was like a premonition. Wafting tendrals of fog, clouding my vision, obscuring my destination. Spattering of rain blurring my windsheild. Lorrena McKinnet, sang softly through my CD speakers, singing of dark days in ancient Scotland.
(End of Mood building)
When I arrived, the place was deserted. I picked a table under the pavilon and set up my gear. The new DPMS .308, and the old Winchester .22, (The Glock 36 remained concealed as always). I laid out a cleaning pad on the table and all my cleaning gear, since the DPMS needed to be cleaned after every shot, as per break in procedure.
I set up two targets on the 50 yard range, one for each rifle. After a short deliberation I decided to warm up with the Winchester. (A bone stock, pristine, Winchester 62a pump gun) Using Federal ”Game-Shock” .22 LR ammo, the first five rounds came in about three inches low, with a grouping of about 4 inches.
Next I loaded a round into the DPMS and fired at the second target. As expected, it doesn’t really kick that bad, but it -is- LOUD. (The Bushnell 3×9x Trophy provides a very clear sight picture) . The round landed about 5 inches low and 1/2 inch to the left. Not bad considering this is the first round fired with the sight system installed! I did a quick chamber and bore cleaning, and fired another round. (These are also Federal Game-Shock ammo, 158 grain softpoint) This second round, nearly penetrated the first hole, maybe a 1/16 inch off! (COOL!)
Back to the Winchester: Moved the rear sight adjustment up one notch, and adjusted my sight picture to a less fine bead (the whole bead, and a bit of the post, nicely centered in the rear V). These five rounds, looked a lot better, still leaning a tad to the right, but the elevation was good. The group at around 3 inches (iron sights at 50 yards, no sand bags) I then tried five more, from a free standing position. (much harder) The grouping was nearly as good as I shot a few weeks ago using the 4x scoped rifle my Dad left me. As expected, the old Winchester is a good shooter. ( I knew this, because I used to use it as a squirrel gun when I was a kid)
Break down the DPMS and do a through cleaning. Next, start walking the aiming point up and across the target. Cleaning after every round fired
. For each round I moved the adjustment about 5 clicks, (three repeats). Now it was close. I moved it out to 100 yards. (I put up two targets again, one for the .22)
Pow, clean DPMS, adjust, Pow, clean, adjust, Pow, BULLSEYE! That was the last .308 round I had brought. Nice finish with the BullsEye! But, I’m sure it will need more tuning. I have 100 rounds of military .308 National Match Ammo on the way for final sighting and the 200 yard range to conquer. I then went back to the Winchester and plinked away another 15 rounds. A couple of near bulleye’s at the 100 yard target, and multiple bounced sticks and stones at different ranges, between the 50 and 100 yard range markers.
Having emptied the rifles, I dropped the carry mag. out of my Glock and popped in a practice mag. (230 grain hardball) I set up a 50 yard pistol target at 10 yards and dropped two quick magazines. Twelve rounds, over looking one stringer, a group of about 4 inches. Noticably big holes! Punching holes in paper accents how much bigger a .45 is than a .30 . (but say’s nothing about the power that the .308 packs)
Overall, it was a nice quiet day and the range. I’m very happy with the DPMS, and expecting to try the little Winchester in next years Turkey shoot at the Club. ( I have to quiet those complainers, who mentioned that I used a ”scoped gun” last year).
The drive back home was uneventful, and after a couple of hours of cleaning, I’m ready to go do it again, as soon as that “National Match ammo” comes in. And providing that our new batch of polititions, don’t find a way to stop me from enjoying my national heritage!

I really hate to be a pessimist, but I’m afraid a sad day has come for the future of our great county. I’ve been trying to get election coverage on the web, what a joke, I couldn’t find one website that just laid out the results. (read ‘em and weep)
I stayed to busy today to pick up a paper, so I don’t really know if the results are posted there. From the bit’s and pieces I’ve picked up on the broadcast news, it looks like bad news.
Why you say? “The Republicans didn’t deserve another shot!”. True, they did not, the Republican (or in du Toit speak, “the stupid”) party, surely didn’t use their last couple of years to everyones advantage. But, they did, keep some small measure of constitutional protection in place. With the Democrats (the “evil party” in du Toit speak) in power, you can pretty much forget about the constitution and bill of rights. Heck, (Hillary speak) “we can fix that, we’ll just change it”.
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t vote a straight ticket, not even close. There are stupids on both sides of the political fence, just as there are intelligents on both sides. Congratulations to Mr. Barcia, and Mr. Stupak.
With that in mind, the Perch were NOT running today. They were staying in deep water and out of sight, wisely trying to duck the coming storms.
